Serve Credit Union Member Awarded Scholarship from Iowa Credit Union Foundation
Des Miones, IA – Gavin Sullivan of Serve Credit Union in Des Moines, IA was recently awarded the Iowa Credit Union Foundation’s (ICUF) Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship, which is presented to four high school students and two post-high school students annually.
Applicants were required to complete the designated online entry form and answer an essay question in no more than 500 words. This year’s question was:
Credit unions are not-for-profit, financial institutions that utilize the cooperative model. The “people helping people” philosophy is the guiding principle to serve their member’s financial needs. Please explain what a cooperative is and why the “people helping people” philosophy is important. How does your membership in a credit union support your financial future?
Gavin Sullivan won for his entry, entitled The People Helping People Mantra. ‘The “people helping people” mantra is a philosophy that has been ingrained in me since I was a child. My step-dad is a firefighter/paramedic with the city of Des Moines and my mom is senior police officer with the city of Des Moines. As long as I can remember they have made sacrifices to serve the public for the greater good of the community.’
“Serve Credit Union is proud to support the Iowa Credit Union Foundation.” Said Mike Farley, Marketing Manager with Serve Credit Union. “We are overjoyed that one of our members is a scholarship winner this year! Way to go Gavin! We want to thank the Iowa Credit Union Foundation for allowing us to share this great scholarship opportunity with our members.”
This year, due to an increase in charitable support from the Iowa credit union community, the Iowa Credit Union Foundation doubled its scholarship award for each winner. A total of $11,500 was awarded to its scholarship recipients, an illustration of its commitment to help Iowans in their journey toward financial well-being.
“The mission of the Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) is to empower people and communities to achieve financial well-being by championing the credit union philosophy of people helping people,” said Jaimie Miller, Executive Director, ICUF. “We do this through critical programs such as the Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship. This year’s scholarship finalists demonstrated a strong passion for their credit union and outstanding knowledge on the essay topics.”
“ICUF’s Warren A. Morrow Scholarship is a true testament to the cooperative spirit of the Iowa Credit Union System.” explained Serve Credit Union CEO Jami Weems, “We are so excited for Gavin and his family. It is clear from Gavin’s winning essay that he learned at a very young age the power of “People Helping People” and the positive impact it has on the communities we live in and serve. We wish Gavin continued success in his next chapter at Iowa State University.”
