By Joey Czellar, Member Experience Officer
Hello Serve Credit Union Members!
I’d like to share with you a recent story about one member’s experience with the credit union and how we were able to save her and her family money. If you haven’t recently, now is as good a time as any to review your current loans and consider refinancing them to potentially save money.
Joey (JC): Good afternoon Rebecca, and thank you for taking a few moments to answer our questions! Before we get started, can you give us a little background about yourself?
Member (RZ): My pleasure! My name is Rebecca, and I’ve been a member of Des Moines Police Officers’ Credit Union since 2006. My family was looking for a good deal on a new car loan, and of course wanted to get financing through Serve Credit Union.
JC: Oh that’s fantastic! So, I heard that we were able to save you some money recently on that new car purchase… can you share more about that experience?
RZ: Well, we were between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, we wanted to stay loyal to Serve Credit Union and the great service we receive, however, we also had the option to get either 0% interest or a $2500 rebate on the car through the dealer. Our credit score was 827, and we were putting $10k down on the vehicle, and Nissan’s rate was still only 3.5%! We did our homework and found it smarter to take the rebate, in which we also found we’d get an additional $500 off the vehicle if we financed with Nissan.
JC: Oh yeah, that is a difficult choice to make… extra money in your pocket verses a lower rate. So what was your end decision?
RZ: We decided to finance with Nissan at the offered 3.5% rate, with the plan to refinance with Serve Credit Union. About two weeks later, once we received our loan paperwork from Nissan, we spoke with Jen who was able to immediately refinance with Serve Credit Union for the lower 1.99% rate. All we had to do was send Jen a copy of the loan documents from Nissan, and she took care of the rest – it was so easy!
JC: That’s great! Was there anything in particular that made it an easy process for you?
RZ: We live in Waukee, so it’s not super convenient to stop in at the branch, but we love saying hello when we do! In our conversation with Jen, she told us about a new service that Serve Credit Union just launched that would enable us to receive loan documents via email and sign them electronically through phone or computer. She sent us the documents, we put in our secure PIN to open them, and were walked through the eSignature process quickly. We then received a copy of our loan documents as a PDF. It couldn’t have been easier, and we didn’t even have to step into the branch to get refinanced!
JC: Rebecca, I don’t have a calculator handy, but it sounds like we were able to help you save some money. If I can ask, what would you communicate to other members at Serve Credit Union about the refinance process?
RZ: We literally saved hundreds of dollars in like 10 minutes by refinancing with Serve Credit Union! I was surprised at how easy it was. I would encourage everyone to think through their loan deals they currently have or might consider in the future, and find out if they could save money with Serve Credit Union too!
JC: Great idea Rebecca! Thanks for your time and for answering a few questions!
As Rebecca mentioned in the interview above, consider the loans you currently have and take a look at our Rates page to compare and see if we can save you money!
